PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants) are a very useful tool for data collection away from the desk rather than the more usual portable PC which is too heavy and unwieldy. As the power consumption of the PDA has reduced and the battery life improved, the potential applications are expanding.

Aitken Scientific brings its experience of designing easy to use and fast PC applications to the field of mobile computing. Our systems have used Windows Mobile 5, Windows CE and the Pocket PC operating system. The use of ActiveSync allows database information collected on the PDA to be transferred later to a PC based server system.

PDA applications

Some examples of PDA applications include:

• Calibrating liquid handlers in the laboratory
• Controlling a laser theodolite using Bluetooth
• Safety assessments
• Control of multiple instruments one at a time
• Control of a dedicated X-ray instrument for detecting lead in painted surfaces

Barcode scanning applications

Recent applications for some of our customers have involved collecting data using a portable hand held bar-code reader, such as the Symbol PPT8800 unit seen here running the Pocket PC operating system.

We developed an application to run on the reader which prompts the user to scan barcodes of plates and equipment when required. The user can edit, delete and rescan existing bar-codes in case of errors. Once the reader is placed back into the cradle a PC application synchronises the data collected and automatically transfers the data into a database before further analysis.
