Due to expansion there is an exciting opportunity to join Aitken Scientific.

We are looking for someone who would enjoy writing software which uses a PC to control and interact with machines, e.g. laboratory equipment, robots, measuring devices and production machinery, and would like to be near the centre of operations. They will be expected to show initiative and fit in well with our staff and customers. They should be prepared to work in a dynamic team where achievement will be very well rewarded.

We develop bespoke software for Science and Technology in the pharmaceutical, engineering, scientific research and development, instrumentation, and manufacturing markets. We work on a project basis with most of the work being carried out at our head office in Thame. Our main development skills are C++ and C# and we occasionally use Visual Basic and web languages. We work with all versions of Windows running on PCs, PDAs and various embedded processors in a real-time environment. Some of the areas we work in are: robotics, process automation, medical devices, laboratory equipment, scientific instruments, manufacturing and embedded systems.

Essential Skills Required

  • First or 2:1 from a good university in science, engineering, or computing disciplines. Good grades at GCSE and A’ level.
  • Ability to write C++ programs for control applications or demonstrate the capability to program in C++.
  • Analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to quickly learn new skills and technologies
  • To be fluent in written and spoken English

Desirable Skills

  • Knowledge of .NET Framework.
  • Knowledge of MFC, STL and COM.
  • PDA/Compact .NET programming.
  • Familiarity with databases including Access, SQL Server, and Oracle would also be an advantage.
  • Knowledge of ASP.NET.
  • PIC programming.
  • To hold a current British driving license.

Salary £20,000 to £30,000 per annum depending upon experience.

The office environment is very friendly and encourages a good team spirit. Our work involves some travel to customer sites, but this is rarely for periods above 1 week. As most projects are office based there is always a pool of expertise to draw on enabling them to develop the most cost effective and technically robust solutions.
