Embedded System for Deerac Fluidics

Touch screen user interface We have completed development of a user interface and hardware control for the new Deerac Fluidics Latitude bulk dispenser. A QScreen touchscreen-controller was the target system, programmed in C using the Mosaic compiler.

The dispenser itself can dispense as little as 50 nanolitres per well and can be linked to a stacker for automated plate handling.

Process Instruments Sentinel

The Sentinel provides an alarm monitoring capability, but the interesting part is how it notifies users that an alarm has occurred. Aitken Scientific added functionality to:

  • Communicate with a mobile phone using Bluetooth
  • Send a text message to a list of users one at a time
  • Wait for a reply text to indicate that the user had read the message
  • Text the next user if a reply is not received within a short period

Other methods of external communication were also provided, including Modbus protocol over RS485 for alarm and device status, USB, RS232 serial and TCP/IP. The chip was a Renesas M16C programmed using the IAR Embedded Workbench.
